Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Christopher H. Browne Oxford Drawing Tour
With the generosity of the ICAA and the leadership of George Saumarez Smith and Martin Burns, the Christopher H. Browne Oxford Drawing Tour studied over a thousand years of history in the course of a week through sketches, measured drawings, and watercolor behind the closed doors of one of England's most historic cities and universities. Access to the built works, design drawings, and models of architects like Christopher Wren, Nicholas Hawksmoor, James Gibbs, James Wyatt, Edwin Lutyens, and others deepened appreciation for the inherited knowledge and craftsmanship of traditional architecture. The high-style composition on medieval streets weave layers of history through Oxford that tell the story of evolution with sensitivity and depth but without limitation on growth. Set among the some of the most valuable and varied resources in architecture, the sketchbook developed into an architectural encyclopedia or pattern book for new design, like that of James Gibbs, to broaden the knowledge of historic precedents and advance the necessary skills to honor vital heritage and achieve timeless design.
